Sorry about the long gap, been busy experimenting with my new stuff.
What's happened since last post? Lets see......Oh yeah Doolittle popped round.
A couple of days ago one of the others finally turned up. the rest of our little group of friends are all on holiday, but I got messages saying they promised to meet up when they got back.
Bonnie had been a bit distracted since our visit to Minnie's, and that parcel, so I answered the doorbell to a girl around my age, her brown hair in it's ponytail swpet onto a shoulder as usual.
We greeted each other cheerfully, and I led her into the living room where Bonnie was frowning at the little book Minnie had given her, turning the pages and rotating the book to read little notes scrawled around the edges. She looked up as we entered and finally managed to smile.
'I'm sure you remember Sam' I said, as Bonnie leapt up to give Sam a welcoming hug.
'Remember? Give me some credit, it's only been a year and a half since I was last here! I also remember we call you Doolittle. With good reason.'
Doolittle laughed and let out a noise like a twittering bird. I should explain, Doolittle is endowed too. She can talk to animals, and has some sort of minimal control over creatures. Them seem to know when she wants them, and most animals we meet is incredibly loyal to her, the stuff she can do is amazing.
So yeah that was a fun day. We went out and Bonnie and Doolittle caught up on life and developments of magic and things like that, Doolittle stopped a minor incident involving two dogs that hate each other (Discreetly of course, magic is not something you just go boasting about.) Other that that pretty uneventful time until this morning.
I, to my mum's annoyance, had most of the dining room table covered in stuff I was experimenting with when Bonnie came downstairs this morning. She yawned as she entered and stared at the small chest, the phials and small bowls and piles of sprigs and plants that covered the table and said 'Was that really you coming down here at 2 in the morning? Why?'
'Needed to pick some new herbs while dew was still on them for some extra potential, according to this' I replied, tapping my notebook without looking up from the crushed bits of twig I was carefully sprinkling into a bowl of green liquid with petals in it. 'Convenient both our ancestors leaving us these notebooks to help us, wasn't it? They were friends too, just like us, says so in mine.'
She nodded, still a bit sleepy. 'Yeah mine too. Listen, I've been thinking about what the parchment Minnie gave me said, and a lot about that parcel. I don't know how he got it wrapped up like that, or wrote a warning in advance, let alone have it delivered after all this time, but it scares me. You know yesterday when your book said 'in moderation' and you put in four leaves and it blew a hole in the chair?'
'Yesterday you agreed to never speak of it again! One just didn't seem powerful enough.'
'Yes, well, I'm listening to MY expert. I'm off magic. I don't want to share his fate. I'll help you with your stuff, and it's not like I'm going to pretend magic isn't real and have nothing more to do with you and our friends, I'll be as involved as ever, I just don't want my magic anymore. Let's be honest, you were always more into it than me, and I think my magic comes with too great a risk, given the evidence.'
'Wow. I thought you might say something like that. Well ok, if it's what you really want.'
'Yep. I knew you'd understand. What are you working on?'
'Um.... some sort of transformation, I think.'
'Oh. Cool.'
She sat down and helped by passing me things, and breaking stuff up, and even did a pretty good impression of Doolittle's bird twittering when one landed on the windowsill, making us laugh and showing me that the fun loving cheerful Bonnie was still there, behind all the shock of a few days ago. It was good to know. I can't help thinking giving up magic is going to be harder than she thinks. Oh well. At least we're here to help.
